The selection or test exam is not a board exam but the institution’s own. Its weight is no less for that, because it decides who is allowed to fill in the form for the board exam.

Why it carries so much weight

An institution uses the selection result to judge who is ready to sit the board exam. An unsatisfactory result can obstruct form fill-up, and that carries the risk of losing a whole year. Treating it as "only a school exam" is therefore among the most expensive mistakes available.

Using it as a rehearsal

This is the first time you sit the whole syllabus, under time, in exam conditions — the closest thing to the real event. So treat it not as a hurdle to clear but as a source of information: which subject ran out of time, which chapter you could write nothing on, where the handwriting fell apart.

What to do when the result comes

1. Look at each script yourself — find where the marks were cut.
2. Sort the errors by type: not known, misunderstood, ran out of time.
3. The "ran out of time" errors need speed practice, not more reading.
4. Rebuild the plan for your remaining time around that list.

If the result is poor

If the result is poor, the first step is to talk to the institution, because arrangements differ — some hold a re-test, some allow a conditional permission. The second is to analyse the scripts rather than panic, since there is usually meaningful time between the selection exam and the board exam, and substantial improvement is possible in it.
