Getting Started in Freelancing

Freelancing is not easy money from home — it is a business in which you handle the skill, the marketing and the client service yourself. Thousands do it successfully from Bangladesh, but most of those who fail make the same mistake: hunting for work before building the skill.

The right order to start in

  1. Pick one skill and become genuinely employable in it — three to six months.
  2. Build a portfolio of three to five samples — your own practice projects count.
  3. Open a professional profile on one marketplace: a clear title, an honest skill list and your portfolio.
  4. Apply for small, low-paid jobs first — the goal is not money but your first review.
  5. Deliver every job on time and to standard — a good review is the key to the next one.
  6. Once you have five to ten good reviews, raise your rates gradually.

Writing your profile and proposals

  • Put the actual service in your profile title, not phrases like “hardworking freelancer”.
  • Address the client’s problem in the first two lines — that is all most of them read.
  • Never send the same proposal to everyone — read each brief and answer it specifically.
  • Link the relevant portfolio pieces, not everything you have made.
  • Keep your English simple and correct — plain accurate sentences beat complicated ones.

Communication in English is the single biggest differentiator in freelancing. Strong technical work with weak communication loses clients — our English section is built to help with exactly that.

  • Foreign earnings can be brought in legally as remittance through a bank, and many banks have dedicated arrangements for freelancers.
  • Keep records and invoices of your income — both tax and banking require them.
  • Look into the freelancer ID card and the facilities attached to it.
  • Do not start a large job without a deposit, and avoid offers to pay outside the marketplace.
  • Put the scope, deadline and number of revisions in writing.
