The commonest mistake in physics is memorising the formula first and hoping the concept follows. The order is the reverse — understand the concept and the formula becomes meaningful, and can be reconstructed even if forgotten.
The chapters
The book opens with physical quantities and measurement, then moves through motion, force, work and power, states of matter, heat, waves and sound, light, static and current electricity, magnetism, modern physics and science for saving life. The order is deliberate: each chapter uses the previous one’s concepts, so skipping leaves you stranded later.

The formula-memorising trap
Unless you know what each quantity in a formula means and in what unit it is measured, the formula is a row of letters. When the paper turns the question slightly — changing which quantity is unknown — a memorised formula fails. Writing the meaning and unit of each quantity beside every formula removes the problem entirely.
Do not neglect the practical notebook
- Practical marks are comparatively easy and count towards the result.
- Writing the whole notebook in the last week multiplies errors.
- Write it up on the day of the experiment, while it is fresh.
- Draw the diagrams and graphs yourself rather than copying.
