Almost everyone who struggles with chemistry struggles at the same point — moving on to equations without properly understanding the periodic table and valency. With that base in place, the rest of the book becomes surprisingly straightforward.
The chapters
The book opens with the idea of chemistry and laboratory safety, then states of matter, the structure of matter, the periodic table, chemical bonding, the mole concept and calculations, reactions, acid-base balance, mineral resources, chemistry for saving life and chemistry in our lives. The periodic table and bonding chapters are the foundation for all the rest.

The periodic table is the base
The periodic table is not a list to memorise but a map — which element sits where, why it sits there, and what its position predicts about its behaviour. Learn to read that map and valency, bonding and reactions all become predictable, at which point individual reactions no longer need memorising.
Practising equations
- Write the reactants and products separately.
- Balance by counting atoms of each element, not by guessing.
- Do not forget the state symbols.
- Rewrite the same equation a few days later to check it stuck.

Frequently asked questions
From the periodic table and valency. With those in place, bonding, reactions and calculations become far easier.
No. Once you can read the periodic table most reactions become predictable, and the memorising load drops sharply.
Stop guessing and count the atoms of each element. Counting slowly becomes fast within a few weeks.
