My child copies from the book — what do I do?

Have them write with the book closed, and say the answer aloud first — speaking organises the thought.

Is a short answer a problem?

No. The aim this year is their own words, not length. Short but their own is the right direction.

My child seems to have fallen behind — why?

Probably not. A new and harder task is being asked this year — understand first, then write it yourself.

In class 4 answers are no longer lifted from the book but written in the child’s own words. That single change is the beginning of the most important skill of the rest of school.

Why writing in your own words is hard

Copying from the book is easy, because it requires no understanding — only locating. Writing in your own words requires understanding first and then organising. That is why many children appear to fall behind this year, when in fact a new and harder task is being asked of them.

How to help at home

Have them say the answer aloud before writing it.
Let them write with the book closed, then compare.
Accept short answers — the aim is their words, not length.
Ask the same question again two or three days later.

From saying it to writing it

What a child can say, they can write — only the step differs. So letting them say the answer first is the most effective help: speaking organises the thought, and the writing becomes a matter of setting it down. A child who cannot say it has not understood, and then it is the lesson rather than the answer that needs rereading.
