From words to sentences — the year reading starts to carry meaning.

Class 2 Bangla Book

বাংলায় পড়তে চাও? দেখো: দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণির বাংলা বই

In class 1 the child learned to read words; the work of class 2 is joining them into sentences and understanding what a sentence says. This is where reading first begins to carry meaning.

What this year is for

The lessons now arrive as short stories and rhymes, because a story is the easiest way to teach sentence reading. When a child wants to know what happens next, they will work through the difficulty — interest is the best teacher here. So saying a word or two about the story before reading raises the appetite for it considerably.

How to help at home

  • After reading, ask what happened in the story.
  • Let the child retell the story in their own words.
  • Stay with one lesson over several days rather than hurrying.
  • Let them follow the line with a finger while reading.

A simple way to check understanding

Whether a child can read is easy to see; whether they understood is not, because fluent reading can still miss the sense. The simplest test is to say, at the end, "now tell me the story." If they can retell it in their own words, they understood; if they repeat the book’s sentences exactly, they read without understanding.
