My child is slow with letters — should I worry?

Usually not. Pace varies a great deal at this age. A short, regular daily session works better than hurrying.

Is memorising words a good idea?

No. Memorising words without knowing the letters means the child cannot read new ones — they are recalling, not reading.

How long should we read each day?

Ten to fifteen minutes is enough, but every day. Long sittings do not work at this age.

The class 1 Bangla book has one job: that the child learns to recognise letters and to join them into words. Nothing beyond that is expected this year, and that is the important point.

What the book is trying to do

The book uses large pictures, large type and short words, because at this age eye-and-hand coordination is still forming. The lessons move slowly — single letters first, then two- and three-letter words, then short sentences. That order is deliberate, so pushing ahead to later pages usually does more harm than good.

How to help at home

A little every day — ten minutes is enough, but daily.
Let the child read aloud while you listen.
When a mistake happens, let the sentence finish before correcting.
Talk about the pictures — the easiest route into words.

The hurry that does harm

Many guardians want the child through the whole book quickly, and in that hurry words get memorised before the letters are properly known. The result is the opposite of what was wanted: the child can say familiar words but cannot read new ones, because they are not reading — they are recalling. The difference shows in class 2, when the number of new words rises.
