Board registration is the least discussed and longest-lasting thing that happens in class 9. The name and date of birth that go onto this form are what get printed on the SSC certificate — and that certificate later becomes the decisive record of your date of birth for a passport, a job and higher study.

What must be verified

1. The spelling of your name — exactly as on the birth registration.
2. Your parents’ names — the commonest place for an error.
3. Date of birth — check it wherever it appears, in figures and in words.
4. Group and subjects — the ones you are actually taking.
5. The photograph — clear and recent.

What an error costs

Registration details can be corrected later, but the process is long, document-heavy and grows harder with time. The worst case is an error found years afterwards — applying for a passport and discovering the certificate’s date of birth does not match the national ID. Then it has to be corrected on both sides, and that takes months.

Check it with your family

Filling the form, students often write the spelling from memory when the certificate reads differently. So sit with a parent, put the birth registration certificate in front of you, and match it letter by letter before the form goes in. Ten minutes here saves ten months later.

Keeping the registration card

• When the card arrives, check every detail again at once.
• Keep a photocopy and a scan separately.
• It is needed alongside the admit card at exam time — do not lose it.
• If you find an error, tell the institution at once — do not leave it.
