Two papers, two question types, a separate practical — understand the shape first.

HSC 2028 Exam Structure

Knowing the structure is not knowing the marks. Marks can change between cohorts, but what an examination is made of has been stable for years — and two years out, that is the useful knowledge.

The parts the examination is made of

PartWhat it assesses
1st paperThe chapters belonging to that paper
2nd paperAn entirely separate set of chapters
Creative partApplying and explaining a concept
Multiple-choice partRecall across the whole syllabus
PracticalHands-on work, the notebook and a viva

The practical is a separate block

At HSC the practical examinations sit in a separate block once the theory papers finish, and the centre may be different. The practical consequence is that the examination is not over when the theory is — and that is exactly when many students relax and lose easy marks. Keeping the practical notebook current from class 11 removes the risk entirely.

Two question types, two kinds of study

The creative part asks in tiers from a stimulus, and the upper tiers cannot be cleared by memory — the concept has to be applied. The multiple-choice part draws on the whole syllabus, where breadth matters more than depth. These are two different demands, and a two-year plan needs time for each; treating one as preparation for the other leaves one of them neglected.

Planning two years around the structure

  1. In class 11, read the 1st-paper chapters deeply.
  2. Drill each chapter’s multiple-choice questions as you finish it.
  3. Write the practical notebook on the day of the work.
  4. The 2nd papers in the first half of class 12, revision in the second.

The actual marks on each part are set by board instruction and can change between cohorts; nothing has been published for the 2028 cohort.
