The book runs from an introduction and transactions through double entry, the journal, the ledger, the trial balance, the cash book, the accounting cycle and the financial statements. The order is a chain: transaction to journal, journal to ledger, ledger to trial balance. A weak link makes every later step wrong, and the error surfaces only much later.

Settling debit and credit

For each transaction, first write which two accounts are affected.
Identify each account’s type — asset, liability, income or expense.
Then apply the rule to decide which is debited and which credited.
Redo the same transaction a few days later to check it stuck.
