How much harder is class 6 English?

Two books arrive — lessons and grammar — and the lessons lengthen. To a fluent reader it is just more reading; to others, a wall.

How do I know if they are fluent?

Can they read an unfamiliar passage straight through, and say what it was about? Those two.

What if they stop at every word?

Increase regularity rather than volume — one short lesson daily over some months. Fluency takes time, not pressure.

In class 6 the English lessons lengthen and grammar arrives as a separate subject. That jump is easy only for those who reached fluency in class 5.

What the jump to class 6 looks like

Class 6 brings two English books — one of lessons and one of grammar. The lessons are longer, the sentences more complex, and rules are asked to be learned for the first time. To a child who reached fluency in class 5 this is simply more reading; to one who did not, it is a sudden wall.

How to help at home

Have them read one lesson aloud daily.
Ask two questions in English afterwards.
Ask for a three- or four-sentence paragraph weekly.
Have the word notebook now carry a sentence too.

How to judge fluency

The simple test: can the child read an unfamiliar passage straight through rather than stopping, and afterwards say roughly what it was about? Both, and they are ready. If they stop at every word, the answer is not more volume but more regularity — one short lesson a day, over some months.
