Can I read a guide instead of the original?

No. Connecting a stimulus to the sense of a piece requires having read the piece; a guide’s summary will not do it.

Do I need the author note?

You do. At the upper tiers there is nothing to write without the context and the writer’s position.

What should I keep for revision?

A two-sentence central idea for each piece in one notebook. Two years on, that suffices instead of the whole book.

Sahityapath is the principal HSC Bangla textbook, and its pieces are longer and deeper than those of classes 9 and 10. The commonest misuse of this book is reading a guide and skipping the original.

What the book collects

Sahityapath collects both prose and verse, each with an author note and an introduction to the text. Those supporting parts cannot be skipped: at the upper tiers of a creative question there is nothing to write without the context of a piece and the writer’s position. Whatever the stimulus, the answer rests on the sense of the piece and on applying it.

How a piece is used in a creative answer

Read the stimulus and decide which piece it echoes.
At the lower tiers, give information straight from the piece.
At the upper tiers, connect the stimulus to the piece’s sense.
At the last tier, give your own evaluation with reasons.

An effective order to read in

Introduction to the text first, then the piece, then the author note — read in that order and the piece arrives with its context, with the writer’s position landing at the end. Writing the central idea in two sentences after each piece means that two years later, at revision, the notebook is enough and the whole book need not be reread.
