CV for a Fresh Graduate with No Experience
How to build a CV when you have no job history yet, with a full model.
With no work history, the CV leads on education and on what you did alongside it: academic results, projects, training, computer and language skills, and any voluntary or club responsibility. Move the experience section below skills rather than leaving it empty, and let the career objective carry the ambition.
The format
Reorder the sections
With no work history the standard order leaves an embarrassing gap where experience should be. The fix is to reorder rather than to leave a heading empty: move skills and training up, and let education carry the weight it deserves at this stage.

What counts as experience when you have none
More than students think. Private tutoring, a family business, unpaid work for a club or a society, a university project with a real output, volunteering after a flood — all of these are experience, and describing one properly is far better than leaving the section out.
- Private tutoring: say how many students, at what level, for how long.
- Club or society responsibility: name the post and what you were responsible for.
- A project: say what it produced, not what the course required.
- Volunteering: name the organisation and the period.
Let the education section do more work
Add one line under the most recent qualification naming relevant subjects, a project title, or a result you are proud of. This is the section where a fresh graduate has the most to show, and a bare list of four qualifications wastes it.
Be honest in the objective
Say you are at the beginning. Stated confidently, that is not a weakness — an employer hiring at entry level is expecting it, and an objective that implies experience the CV does not support is worse than one that is straightforward.

All details in this model are fictional. Note that the treasurer's post appears under experience rather than under activities: it involved handling money, which is exactly what the objective claims an interest in.
What earns and loses marks
- 🚨 Never leave an “Experience” heading empty. Either fill it with tutoring, projects and responsibilities, or move it down and lead with training.
- Put a relevant activity under experience rather than activities when it genuinely supports the objective — a treasurer’s post beside an accounting objective is experience.
- Add one line under your most recent qualification: a project, relevant subjects, a distinction.
- Quantify everything you can: eight students, four years, three months.
- Be straightforward about being at the start. Confidence about it reads better than a claim the CV cannot support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Private tutoring, work in a family business, a post held in a club or society, a substantial university project, or volunteering. All of these are experience and all can be described with dates and numbers. Writing “None”, or leaving the heading with nothing under it, is the one thing to avoid.
Yes, and it matters more for a fresh graduate than for anyone else, because it is where you say what you are aiming at when your record does not yet show it. Name the field and the kind of entry-level role, and be straightforward about being at the beginning.
Quantify what you did and put the most relevant items highest. “Taught accounting to eight HSC students over four years” is substantial and entirely true; “tutoring experience” is neither. Reordering sections so that training and skills come before an empty experience heading does the rest.
