GPA & the Grading System — How an HSC Result Is Calculated

HSC grading works like SSC’s, with one important difference: almost every subject has two papers, and both papers combine into a single subject grade. So a weak 1st Paper can be largely offset by a strong 2nd Paper.
The grade and grade-point table
HSC results are published as grades, not marks. Each subject earns a letter grade and a grade point (GP) based on the marks scored, and the average of those grade points is your GPA.

To pass you need at least 33 marks in every subject — and separately in the practical where one is held. An F in a subject means you have failed that subject.
How the GPA is calculated
- Find each subject’s grade point from the marks scored, using the table above.
- For a two-paper subject, both papers combine into a single subject grade.
- Add up the grade points of every subject except the fourth subject.
- Subtract 2 from the fourth subject’s grade point and add the remainder to that total (if it is negative, count it as 0).
- Divide the total by the number of subjects excluding the fourth subject — that is your GPA, capped at 5.00.
The fourth-subject rule is why an A+ there lifts your GPA — but a published GPA never exceeds 5.00.
How a two-paper subject is calculated
Suppose you score 75 in Physics 1st Paper and 85 in the 2nd. Together that is 160 out of 200 — 80% — so the subject grade is A+ with a grade point of 5.00.
This is why a slightly weak paper is not a catastrophe — a strong result in the other paper can save the subject grade. But remember you must still separately clear the pass mark in each paper.
In subjects with a practical you must pass the theory and the practical separately. Failing either means failing the subject.

Scoring 80 or more in a 100-mark subject earns an A+ and a grade point of 5.00.
Two is subtracted from the fourth subject’s grade point and the remainder is added to your total. So an A+ (5.00) in the fourth subject adds 3 extra points.
An F in any subject means no GPA is published in the HSC result — it shows as a fail, and you must sit an improvement exam in that subject.
A GPA is the average for one exam (such as SSC or HSC); a CGPA is the cumulative average across several semesters or years, used mainly at university level.
