CV with a Covering Letter — Complete Model
A covering letter and CV as one answer, in the form board questions ask for.
When a question asks for an application with a CV, write the covering letter first as a formal letter — designation, address, subject, "Sir", the post applied for, why you fit, and "Yours faithfully" — then attach the CV as a separate document beginning with your name. The letter argues; the CV lists.
The question: Write an application with a CV for the post of an assistant teacher.
The format
Two documents, in order
When a question asks for an application with a CV, it wants two things: a formal covering letter, then the CV beneath it. The letter argues; the CV lists. Writing one without the other answers half the question.
The covering letter
A formal letter in the standard layout: the receiver's designation and address at the left, the date, a subject line naming the post, Dear Sir, three short paragraphs, and Yours faithfully with your full name.
- Paragraph 1: the post applied for, and where you saw it advertised.
- Paragraph 2: why you are suitable — qualification, training, the specific skills the advertisement asked for.
- Paragraph 3: refer to the enclosed CV and offer to attend an interview.
- Keep it to about 120 words; the CV carries the detail.
The CV beneath it
Head it Curriculum Vitae and begin with your name. Everything from the letter must agree with everything in the CV — the same name, the same qualification, the same training. Inconsistency between the two is an easy error to make when both are invented under time pressure.
What each document is marked on
| Covering letter | CV | |
|---|---|---|
| Register | formal sentences | notes |
| Person | first person (I) | no first person at all |
| Length | about 120 words | as long as the facts need |
| Purpose | to argue suitability | to record facts |
| Layout marks | salutation, subject, subscription | section order, reverse chronology |

Subject: Application for the post of Assistant Teacher (English)
Dear Sir,
I wish to apply for the post of Assistant Teacher of English advertised in The Daily Star on 1 September 2026.
I completed my BA (Honours) in English from Jahangirnagar University in 2025 and my MA in 2026. During my final year I taught English part-time at a coaching centre in Savar for eleven months, where I took classes of about thirty students at secondary level, and I have completed a short course in classroom methods run by the university's Institute of Education. I am comfortable teaching both the language and the literature components of the secondary syllabus.
My curriculum vitae is enclosed. I should be glad to attend an interview at any time convenient to you.
Yours faithfully,

What earns and loses marks
- Write the letter first and the CV second — that is the order the question expects.
- 🚨 Keep the two consistent. If the letter says eleven months of teaching, the CV must say the same.
- The letter argues in sentences; the CV records in notes. Do not let one drift into the other’s register.
- Match the salutation and subscription: Dear Sir → Yours faithfully.
- Mention the enclosed CV explicitly in the last paragraph of the letter.
Frequently Asked Questions
The covering letter, then the CV beneath it. The letter introduces you and argues that you fit the post; the CV supplies the evidence. Writing the CV alone, or the letter alone, answers only half the question when both are asked for.
About 120 words in three short paragraphs. Its job is to say which post, why you fit, and that the CV is enclosed. A letter that lists every qualification has taken over the CV’s work and will read as repetitive when the two are marked together.
Yes, exactly. Since both are invented under time pressure, it is easy to give a different year, institution or duration in each. Examiners notice, and inconsistency undermines an answer that is otherwise well structured. Decide the facts once, before you start writing.
