Application for Leave of Absence
Model application to the headmaster for planned leave to attend a family wedding.
An application giving exact dates and saying how the missed work will be covered.
How to write it
- Distinguish this from a sick-leave application: here the reason is an event, so name the event, where it is and why your presence is required.
- Give the exact dates and say whether they are inclusive. "A few days" cannot be granted.
- Say how you will cover the work you miss — notes from a classmate, assignments completed in advance.
- If a test or a class test falls in the period, mention it and ask what should be done, rather than leaving the school to discover it.

Subject: Application for leave of absence for four days.
Sir
With due respect, I beg to state that I am a student of Class IX, Section C, of your school, bearing roll number 26. My elder sister's wedding is to be held at our ancestral home in Natore on 18 September, and as the ceremonies begin two days earlier my parents wish the whole family to travel together on 16 September.
I therefore need leave from 16 to 19 September inclusive, four days in all. I have arranged with my classmate Ruma to collect notes for the lessons I shall miss, and I shall complete the assignments due in that week before I leave. I understand that a class test in mathematics is scheduled for 18 September, and I request your guidance as to whether I may sit it on my return.
I, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant me leave for these four days and oblige thereby.
I remain,
Sir,
Your obedient student,
Farhana Yasmin

Frequently Asked Questions
Sick leave is for illness and is usually short and unplanned; leave of absence is for a known event and is requested in advance. Because it is planned, the application should name exact dates and say how the missed work will be covered — a sick-leave application cannot.
Yes, and asking for guidance about it is better than staying silent. Raising it shows you have checked the calendar, and it lets the school arrange something rather than discover the absence on the day of the test.
Two lines. Name the event, where it is, and why your presence is required. A long account of family circumstances is unnecessary and weakens the application; what the headmaster needs is the dates and the assurance that the work will be made up.
