A child can be competent in all four operations and still stall on a word problem, because that requires first understanding what is being asked and then deciding which operation applies. That second step is the foundation of algebra in class 6, since forming an equation is exactly translating a problem into the language of mathematics. Time spent on word problems this year is the best investment available.
