Bangla is one of the preliminary papers where effort converts into marks almost directly, because it rewards recall of a bounded, repeating body of facts far more than it rewards analysis.
It is, though, two subjects wearing one name — language and literature — and they reward opposite study habits. Reading both the same way wastes your time on one of them.
What the language half covers
The language half is grammar-driven and its questions are rule-based. Once a rule is genuinely understood you can answer it on an unfamiliar word, so mastering rules pays far better here than memorising lists.

What the literature half covers
The literature half is fact-driven, so organised lists carry it rather than rules. Working era by era is the most effective route — moving in order from the earliest texts to the modern period builds links between writers and works, so forgetting one detail lets you recover it through another.
Author cards work better than anything else here: dates, titles conferred, the notable works, and one famous line. In the last week before the exam you review the cards, not the book.
Which books to hold on to
Adding books is the commonest mistake on this paper. One solid grammar text, one literature companion and a compilation of past questions will normally be the whole shelf you need.
- The board’s class 9–10 Bangla grammar text is an unmatched base — a great many questions come straight out of it.
- Solve past papers separately and keep a tally of how often each chapter has appeared.
- Keep one notebook for questions you got wrong; before the exam it becomes the most valuable thing you own.
The mistakes that keep costing marks
- Guessing dates and honorifics in literature — there is no room for guessing here, and leaving it blank is often the better call.
- Memorising grammar examples without the underlying rule, so an unfamiliar word leaves you stranded.
- Cramming idioms and one-word substitutes at the end, when they are a daily drip-feed subject.
- Ignoring your own spelling errors — they come back as the correct-usage questions.
The mark split for Bangla in the preliminary is set by the commission; confirm it from the current circular and bpsc.gov.bd.
Frequently asked questions
Put your early time into language, because a rule once mastered stays and transfers to unseen questions. Literature is recall, so it belongs to regular short revisions rather than long sittings.
For grammar the class 9–10 board text is a strong enough base, but the literature syllabus is wider than it, so one companion book is needed.
