Assessment, audit and appeal — a profession of document-based analysis.

BCS Taxation Cadre

বাংলায় পড়তে চাও? দেখো: বিসিএস কর ক্যাডার

Taxation is analytical work. What sits in front of an officer is accounts, returns and supporting evidence, and the job is to read them against each other and arrive at the correct liability. It is quiet work, rule-bound, and demanding of sustained attention.

What the day contains

Officers work in tax zones and appellate offices. A day includes verifying filed returns, holding hearings, listening to a taxpayer’s explanation, running audits and writing assessment orders. Because every decision is appealable, the reasoning and evidence have to be set down clearly in the order itself.

Reading law is the daily task

Income tax law changes with each financial year, so study never finishes in this profession. Anyone unwilling to keep reading the statute and the circulars will struggle. Conversely, for someone who enjoys analysis, every complicated set of accounts is a solvable puzzle.

Who it suits

  • Someone who can sit with documents for long stretches.
  • Someone comfortable reading accounts and financial statements.
  • Someone who can write a reasoned decision.
  • Someone who prefers a settled workplace and regular hours.

Set against the other cadres

Compared with administration or police the hours are far more predictable and the workplace more settled, which is a real advantage for family life. The trade is less variety — the days resemble one another, and success shows up in the file rather than in a visible event.

Rates, rebates and thresholds change with each year’s finance act. Check the latest notification from the revenue board before using any figure.
