Investigation, law and order, and leadership — where fitness is also a condition.

BCS Police Cadre

Policing is a profession where the consequence of a decision is visible at once, and where the decision often has to be made on incomplete information under pressure. That single quality sets it apart from every other general cadre.

Three strands of duty

The job divides roughly into three strands — maintaining law and order, investigating crime, and administrative supervision. The first is managing crowds, processions and events such as elections; the second is investigating cases and preparing charge sheets; the third is supervising the force under you, its training and its paperwork.

Training and the first posting

Appointment is followed by a long foundation course in which law, investigative procedure, weapons handling and physical training run together. The course is physically demanding, so anyone placing this cadre first should be keeping up regular fitness work from the preparation stage onward.

The candidate it fits

  • Someone physically fit and prepared to stay that way.
  • Someone who can respond when called at any hour.
  • Someone who can lead calmly under pressure.
  • Someone interested in reading law and applying it.

The realities worth knowing first

Leave is irregular, spells away from family can be long, and both public expectation and public criticism run high. Against that, the impact of the work is directly visible — an investigation carried through properly shows up in the life of a family.

Physical standards and appointment conditions are set in the circular; check what applies to you in the current BCS circular.
