What a day in field administration looks like

At upazila and district level the day is spent directly with citizens — hearing land disputes, overseeing relief distribution, taking charge of an exam centre, running a mobile court, following the progress of local development work. It is varied and never the same twice, and the pressure is equally unbounded: during a disaster or an election, working hours cease to exist.

The secretariat is a different job

A posting to the secretariat changes the character of the work entirely — files instead of citizens, drafting instead of hearings. Policy formulation, scrutinising budget proposals, inter-ministerial coordination and preparing answers to parliamentary questions become the substance of it. Candidates comfortable with writing and analysis often find this phase more absorbing than the field.

What to weigh before choosing it
