The two languages build sentences differently — swapping words is not translation.

Translation in the Bank Written Exam

Most marks are lost in translation by candidates who swap word for word. The two languages build sentences differently, so imposing one’s structure on the other produces sentences that are grammatical yet unnatural.

The right sequence for translating

  1. Read the whole passage once and grasp the meaning.
  2. Translate by sense, not sentence by sentence.
  3. Rewrite in the natural order of the target language.
  4. Check it against the original at the end.

Where terminology trips people up

A bank translation naturally carries economic and banking terminology, and that is where most candidates stall. Noting the common Bangla form beside the English term while reading economic news builds a working vocabulary within months. Do not invent terminology — use the form that is already in circulation, because an examiner reading your script recognises the established word and pauses at an invented one. Where you genuinely cannot recall a term, a short descriptive phrase reads better than a coinage.

The usual mistakes

  • Word-for-word swapping, leaving the sentence unnatural.
  • Mixing সাধু and চলিত in the Bangla version.
  • Inventing your own terminology.
  • Dropping a sentence from the original.
