In the multiple-choice stage only the correct answer counts; in the written stage the examiner wants to see how you got there. So even with the same chapters read, the preparation has to be quite different.
How to lay out a solution
Once this becomes habit the solving speeds up and the examiner can follow the reasoning at a glance. A correct answer buried in a disordered script rarely earns full marks.
- Write out the given quantities first.
- State clearly what is to be found.
- Put the formula or relation on its own line.
- Show the arithmetic step by step; skip nothing.
- Mark the final answer separately, with its unit.
The arithmetic of partial credit
The great advantage of the written stage is partial credit. Even with the final figure wrong, a correct formula and correct intermediate steps carry part of the mark. That is why writing out as much as you can, step by step, beats leaving a problem blank.

The right way to practise
While drilling multiple choice many people calculate in their head and check against the options — for the written stage that habit is dangerous. From the preparation stage, solve every problem fully on paper, so that writing the steps feels natural in the hall. What is not habit does not arrive under pressure.
