A tight argument in few words — the structure is half the mark.

Focus Writing in the Bank Written Exam

Focus writing is not an essay. It is a short, organised, argued piece on a set topic within a word limit. The advantage therefore goes not to whoever knows most but to whoever can organise least into the clearest shape.

A structure that works

  1. Opening — what the topic is and why it matters, in two sentences.
  2. Context — the present position, briefly.
  3. The argument — two or three points, each with one example.
  4. The other side — one paragraph on limits or risks.
  5. Close — a recommendation or a conclusion.

Living inside the word limit

Overrunning the limit is the commonest failure here, and the cause is nearly always the same — starting to write without a plan. Spend two minutes noting the points in the margin and deciding roughly how many sentences each gets. The piece then stays balanced and the closing does not collapse in a rush.

The topics that recur

  • Current issues in the economy and the banking sector.
  • Digital transactions and financial inclusion.
  • Youth employment and enterprise development.
  • Remittances and the export sector.
  • Climate change and sustainable finance.

A preparation habit

Read the economy page of a national daily each day and write three points on each significant item in your notebook — what is happening, why it matters, what should be done. In a few months that notebook becomes a ready store, and whatever topic comes up in the hall you have points to write.

Word limits and marks can differ between recruitment circulars; confirm from the current one.
