English at the written stage is not English at the multiple-choice stage. Nothing here asks you to recognise a rule; here you build something in correct English on a blank page, which is a considerably harder task.
Three tasks, three demands

How to write the précis
The commonest error in a précis is lifting sentences from the passage. The task is the reverse — read the whole passage, grasp its central statement, then write it compactly in your own words as though the text were closed. Examples, repetition and ornament go; only the skeleton of the argument stays.
Habits that raise the standard of language
- Write short sentences — long ones invite errors.
- Vary your words rather than repeating one.
- Read newspaper editorials in English regularly.
- Write one essay a week and have someone read it.
The errors that cost most
Subject–verb disagreement, misuse of articles and inconsistent tense cost the most marks in written English, because each can recur in every sentence. Drilling those three areas separately lifts the quality of the whole script at once.
