A bank board is testing two things — whether the candidate has a minimum grasp of banking, and whether they are fit to sit in front of a customer. Every question touches one or the other.
The near-certain questions
- Why banking — certain if your degree is in another field.
- One basic question from your own academic subject.
- Your view on a current economic issue.
- Something about your own district.
- A situation: an unhappy customer, what do you do?
Answering "why banking"
The weakest possible answer is "it is a good job". The board wants a reason grounded in your own experience or interest — an enjoyment of working with numbers, an interest in serving people directly, a pull towards economics. A board can tell when an answer is honest, and equally when it has been rehearsed.
Questions from your own subject
Refresh the basic concepts of your own degree subject before the viva. Boards do not go deep, but failing on an elementary question from your own field leaves a very poor impression, because it raises the question of what you did learn.
How to deliver an answer
- Let the question finish before you begin.
- If you do not know, say so plainly.
- Keep it short — the board’s time is limited.
- On a contentious topic, take a balanced position.
