IELTS Grammar

Grammatical Range & Accuracy is 25% of Writing and Speaking. Band 7+ requires a mix of simple and complex sentences with only occasional errors. You do not need perfect grammar — you need variety used accurately.

Structures that raise your band

• Complex sentences — “Although the policy is costly, it benefits society in the long run.”
• Relative clauses — “Students who study abroad often gain independence.”
• Conditionals — “If governments invested more, pollution would fall.”
• The passive — “The data were collected over ten years.” (useful in Task 1)
• Cohesive tenses — mixing present perfect, past and future to show time relationships.

Errors that cost the most marks

• Subject–verb agreement: “people is” → “people are”.
• Articles: dropping “a/an/the” (a common Bengali-speaker error).
• Uncountable nouns: “informations”, “advices” → “information”, “advice”.
• Run-on sentences with no punctuation between clauses.
• Wrong prepositions: “discuss about”, “depend of” → “discuss”, “depend on”.
