Dialogue About Online Classes

Model dialogue between two students weighing online classes against the classroom.

Two students compare online classes with the classroom, including who gets left out.

A dialogue between Meherun and Shabnam

Meherun: Shabnam, our teacher says the extra classes will be held online. Are you glad?

Shabnam: Mixed. It saves me two hours of travelling, but I learn less.

Meherun: Why less? The teacher is the same.

Shabnam: Because I do not ask anything. In a classroom I raise my hand; on a call I convince myself the question can wait.

Meherun: I do exactly the same. And nobody turns their camera on.

Shabnam: Which makes it worse for the teacher. She is talking to a wall of names.

Meherun: Still, during the pandemic it was the only thing that kept us studying at all.

Shabnam: That is fair. And recordings are genuinely useful — I have watched the trigonometry class three times.

Meherun: You cannot do that with a live classroom.

Shabnam: No. But my cousin in the village could not join at all when the network failed.

Meherun: So it helps those who already have most, and leaves out the rest.

Shabnam: That is the honest summary. It works best as a supplement, not as a replacement.

Meherun: Then let us at least turn our cameras on and ask something. It costs us nothing.

Shabnam: Agreed. One question each, every class.
