Dialogue About Child Labour
Model dialogue between two students about child labour and its real causes.
Two students discuss a boy working at a tea stall and why a ban alone would not help him.
A dialogue between Ruhul and Anika
Ruhul: Anika, did you see the boy at the tea stall this morning? He cannot be more than ten.
Anika: I have seen him for months. He is there before school hours and long after.
Ruhul: Why is he not in school? Primary education is free.
Anika: Free is not the same as affordable. His family loses his earnings if he goes, and that is what decides it.
Ruhul: So poverty is the real cause, not indifference.
Anika: Mostly. Sometimes there is no father, sometimes a father who is ill. The child becomes the earner.
Ruhul: But he will earn far less all his life for having missed school.
Anika: That is exactly the trap. It solves this month's problem and creates the next generation's.
Ruhul: Is it not against the law?
Anika: Hazardous work certainly is, and enforcement has improved in factories. It is the small shops and homes that are hard to reach.
Ruhul: Then what actually helps?
Anika: Stipends that replace the lost income, and schools with hours that fit. Punishment alone just moves the child somewhere less visible.
Ruhul: I had thought a ban would settle it.
Anika: A ban without an alternative usually makes things worse for the child it was meant to protect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Poverty above all — the family losing a child's earnings if he goes to school — together with the absence or illness of a parent. Naming the economic mechanism is much stronger than blaming ignorance, which is what most scripts do.
A more thoughtful position scores better: that a ban without an alternative income simply moves the child to less visible work. Stipends replacing lost earnings and flexible school hours are the answers that address the real cause.
Let one speaker hold the simple view and be corrected gently. A dialogue where both speakers denounce child labour from the start has no movement in it; one where a reasonable assumption is examined and revised has an argument.
