Application for a College Bus

A group application giving the numbers, the present journey and a proposed route and timing.

How to write it

• Establish the need with numbers: how many students come from which direction, and how far.
• Describe the present difficulty concretely — irregular buses, three changes, girls travelling alone after dark in winter.
• Propose a route and a timing rather than a vague bus service.
• Say that students would pay a monthly charge. A transport request that assumes free provision will not be granted.

Subject: Application for a college bus for students of the Katakhali area.

Sir

With due respect, we the students of your college residing in the Katakhali and Beltoli areas beg to state that about sixty of us travel eleven kilometres to college each day. There is no direct bus on the route, so most of us change twice, and the local service is irregular in the morning. Students frequently reach college after the first period has begun, and in winter the girls among us reach home after dark.

We therefore request that a college bus be arranged on the Katakhali–Beltoli–college route, leaving Katakhali at seven in the morning and the college at half past four in the afternoon. Sixty students have signed a list undertaking to travel by it regularly, which is enclosed. We are willing to pay a monthly charge for the service, and we understand that the charge must cover the fuel and the driver's wages. If a single bus cannot be spared, we would be glad of even a shared arrangement on alternate days.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to arrange a bus for our route and oblige thereby.
