How to write it

• Identify the specific weakness the club would address — speaking, not grammar. Most students in Bangladesh can read and write far better than they can speak, and saying so gives the club a purpose.
• Describe the activities concretely: conversation hours, a spoken English competition, a wall magazine, film screenings with subtitles.
• Distinguish it from the classroom, or the request looks like a duplicate of the English period.
• Ask for the minimum: a room, a slot and a teacher who will attend rather than teach.

Subject: Application for permission to form an English language club.

With due respect, we the students of the first and second years beg to state that although we study English for two papers, very few of us can hold a conversation in it. The classroom necessarily concentrates on the syllabus and the examination, and there is no occasion in the college on which a student is required to speak English aloud to another student.

We therefore wish to form an English language club. We propose a conversation hour every Tuesday after the last period, in which English alone would be spoken; a monthly wall magazine of student writing; a spoken English competition in the winter; and occasional screenings of English films with subtitles in the audio-visual room. We request the use of room number nine on Tuesdays and the appointment of a teacher of the English department as our adviser, whose role would be to attend rather than to teach, since the purpose is for students to speak to one another.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant us permission to form an English language club and oblige thereby.
