Application for a Library Card
Short model application to the headmaster for a library card to borrow books.
A brief application stating the present limitation, the reason for borrowing and the undertaking.
How to write it
- Say what access you have now and what you cannot do with it. If books can only be read in the library, say so — that is the limitation the card removes.
- Explain what you want to borrow and why: reference books for a project, novels for reading practice, past papers.
- Undertake the obligations that go with a card — returning on time, paying for damage — before they are imposed.
- Keep it very short. This is among the smallest requests in the section and a long application looks out of proportion.

Subject: Application for a library card.
Sir
With due respect, I beg to state that I am a student of Class IX, Section B, of your school, bearing roll number 09. At present students of Class IX may read in the library during the tiffin period but may not take books home, as borrowing is allowed only to those holding a library card.
I am preparing a project on the rivers of Bangladesh for the science fair in November, and the two reference books I need cannot be read through in the twenty minutes available at tiffin. I should also like to borrow English novels regularly, as our English teacher has advised us to read outside the textbook. I undertake to return every book by the date stamped, to keep the books clean and covered, and to pay for any damage or loss.
I, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to issue me a library card and oblige thereby.
I remain,
Sir,
Your obedient student,
Tanjina Akter

Frequently Asked Questions
Very short — two body paragraphs and about a hundred words. The request is small, and an application out of proportion to what it asks for reads oddly. State the limitation, the reason you need to borrow, and the undertaking, then close.
Because it makes the request specific. A named project and a teacher's advice to read outside the textbook show that the card would be used, which is more persuasive than a general wish to read more.
Yes. Undertaking to return on time and to pay for damage answers the only real objection to issuing a card, and offering it before it is asked for shows that you understand the responsibility rather than merely wanting the privilege.
