Application for Permission to Publish the College Magazine
Model application to the principal to revive the annual college magazine.
An application proposing the size, print run, editorial board and how the cost would be met.
How to write it
- Say whether a magazine has existed before and when it last appeared. Reviving something is an easier request than starting something.
- Name what you are asking for: a budget, a teacher as editor-in-chief, and permission to collect writing from students.
- Give the practical shape — how many pages, how many copies, when it would appear — so the cost can be judged.
- Say how the cost might be reduced: advertisements from local shops, a modest price per copy, printing at a nearby press.

Subject: Application for permission to publish the college magazine.
Sir
With due respect, we the students of your college beg to state that the college magazine has not appeared since 2019. Many students write well — three of our friends have been published in the literary pages of national dailies this year — but there is no place within the college where their work can appear, and the annual number was once the main record of the college's activities.
We therefore request permission to revive the magazine. We propose a single annual number of about eighty pages, five hundred copies, to appear before the annual prize giving in February, containing student writing in Bengali and English, a report of the year's activities and photographs. We request that a teacher of the department of Bengali be appointed editor-in-chief and that a student editorial board of six be formed. To reduce the cost we propose to sell advertisement space to local shops and to charge a small price for copies beyond the first thousand pages of student contributions.
We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant permission for the publication of the college magazine and oblige thereby.
I remain,
Sir,
Your obedient student,
Nusaiba Karim

Frequently Asked Questions
Considerably, and the application should say so in the first line. A magazine that has appeared before has a precedent, a format and often a printer; reviving it asks the principal to restore something rather than to approve something new.
Yes — cost is the reason magazines stop appearing. Proposing advertisement space and a price per copy shows that you have thought about the finance rather than assuming the college will pay, and it makes the proposal look serious.
Page count, print run, publication date, languages, and the composition of the editorial board. Those five turn an idea into a plan a principal can approve, whereas "we wish to publish a magazine" invites only a question in reply.
